A new canton proposal in the Quito valley is drawing majority support in polling.
A Click Research survey says seven out of ten residents consulted would vote in favor of creating a new canton. The proposal covers nine parishes and would separate them from Quito's municipal structure.
The headline finding: 67% support creating the new canton in Pichincha.
Where The Survey Was Done
The survey used 1,100 in-person household interviews in Cumbayá, Tumbaco, Puembo, Pifo, Tababela, Yaruquí, Nayón, and Checa.
The poll reports a margin of error of plus or minus 3%. It was commissioned by the Junta Cívica del Valle de Tumbaco, the organization promoting the cantonization proposal.
What Residents Are Saying
The survey also found broad dissatisfaction with conditions in the sector. Seven out of ten respondents rated the current situation in the area as bad or very bad, and two out of three believe conditions will worsen over the next year.
Insecurity leads the list of problems affecting the Ilaló-Tumbaco valley.
For foreign residents, the issue is worth watching because cantonization would be a governance and services question, not just a political label. It could affect how local problems are prioritized in some of Quito's most visible valley communities.
