The Catholic University of Santiago de Guayaquil has developed accessibility tools for students with visual disabilities, including a specialized workstation and keyboard.
What Was Developed
The project includes a tiflocubículo, a tifloteclado, and specialized programs that can read documents, convert text into audio, and make digital material accessible.
The work began in 2015, based on problems that students with visual disabilities were facing in classrooms and computer labs.
One graduate described the purpose directly: the goal is to make the path easier for the students who come next.
What Changed For Students
Before the tools were available, some exams had to be taken orally while classmates completed written tests. Study material also often required help from family members to read or convert documents.
With the adapted tools, students can take exams the same day as classmates using the same content, with the difference being the digital accessibility format.
A university researcher said five students have completed their degrees using tools developed within the project.
What This Means For Expats
For families comparing universities, disability support is not a small detail. This is one concrete example of an Ecuadorian institution building local accessibility infrastructure rather than waiting for imported solutions.
