Semana Santa is Ecuador's biggest travel weekend of the year -- and it starts tomorrow. Whether you're planning to hit the coast, stay in town, or just want to know what's open, here's everything you need to know.
The Dates
The official Semana Santa holiday period runs April 3-5, 2026:
- Thursday, April 3 -- many businesses close early or operate reduced hours
- Friday, April 4 (Good Friday) -- national holiday, most businesses closed
- Saturday, April 5 -- partial holiday, some businesses reopen
Combined with Sunday, this effectively creates a four-day weekend that most of Ecuador uses for travel.
What's Closed
- Banks -- closed Thursday afternoon through Saturday. ATMs remain operational but expect longer lines at machines in tourist areas. Withdraw cash before Thursday
- Government offices -- closed Thursday through Saturday. This includes the Registro Civil, SRI (tax authority), IESS (social security), and municipal offices
- Post offices -- closed
- Many private businesses -- closures vary. Large supermarkets (Supermaxi, Coral, Gran Aki) typically operate reduced hours on Thursday and Saturday but close Friday. Check specific locations
- Schools -- already on break for the week in most provinces
What's Open
- Restaurants -- most restaurants in tourist areas and cities remain open, especially those in the tourism sector benefiting from the IVA reduction
- Supermarkets -- reduced hours Thursday and Saturday, closed or minimal hours Friday
- Pharmacies -- major chains maintain emergency/on-call schedules. Fybeca and Pharmacys typically have at least one location open per district
- Gas stations -- open throughout the weekend
- Hospitals and clinics -- emergency services operate normally. Some private clinics may have reduced outpatient schedules
The IVA Discount
As we covered earlier this week, Executive Decree 348 reduces the IVA from 15% to 8% on tourism services during April 3-5. This covers:
- Hotel and lodging
- Restaurant meals (at registered tourism establishments)
- Tour packages and agency services
- Tourist transportation
- Ecotourism activities
The savings are automatic -- registered businesses will apply the reduced rate on invoices. Keep your invoices if you track IVA for tax purposes.
Major Processions and Events
Semana Santa is Ecuador's most important religious observance, and processions are held nationwide:
Quito
The Procesion de Jesus del Gran Poder on Good Friday is the largest in the country. Thousands of cucuruchos (penitents in purple robes and pointed hoods) walk through the historic center. The route passes through the colonial old town. Streets close to traffic -- plan accordingly if you're in the Centro Historico area.
Guayaquil
Processions through the Malecon 2000 area and central churches. The city also hosts cultural events along the waterfront throughout the weekend.
Cuenca
Multiple processions through the historic center, culminating in Good Friday observances at the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepcion (the New Cathedral). Cuenca's colonial architecture makes these processions particularly scenic. Expect major streets in El Centro to be closed to traffic.
Riobamba
Known for some of the most traditional and elaborate Semana Santa observances in the sierra. If you're looking for an authentic highland experience, Riobamba's processions are worth the trip.
Loja
Traditional processions through the city center with strong community participation.
Popular Travel Destinations
Ecuadorians travel in force during Semana Santa. The most popular destinations:
- Coast beaches -- Montanita, Same, Atacames, Canoa, and Puerto Lopez fill up quickly. If you haven't booked accommodation yet, availability will be limited and prices elevated
- Banos -- the adventure tourism capital is always packed during holidays. Hot springs, waterfall routes, and adventure activities operate throughout the weekend
- Vilcabamba -- popular with both Ecuadorians and expats looking for a quieter alternative to the coast
- Mindo -- cloud forest birding, chocolate tours, and ziplines. A popular short trip from Quito
- Galapagos -- if you have a booking, you're set. Last-minute availability during Semana Santa is virtually nonexistent
Practical Tips for Expats
Traffic: Major highways will be congested, particularly:
- The Quito-Santo Domingo-Coast route (Aloag-Santo Domingo highway)
- The Cuenca-Guayaquil highway
- Coastal routes between beach towns
The ECU 911 system monitors traffic and provides real-time updates. Police will be conducting checkpoints on major routes -- carry your cedula or passport.
Cash: Withdraw cash before Thursday. ATMs in small towns and beach destinations often run out during holiday weekends.
Safety: Tourist areas see increased petty theft during high-traffic holidays. Standard precautions apply -- don't leave valuables visible in parked cars, be aware of your surroundings in crowded areas.
Fanesca: This is the traditional Semana Santa dish -- a thick soup made with 12 types of grains and beans (representing the apostles), salt cod, and various toppings. Nearly every restaurant will offer fanesca during the weekend. It's one of Ecuador's most distinctive dishes and worth trying if you haven't.
What This Means for Expats
- Plan around closures. If you need to do banking, government paperwork, or major shopping, do it today (Wednesday). Thursday afternoon through Saturday will have very limited services
- The IVA savings are real but modest. On a $500 weekend of tourism spending, you'll save about $35. Meaningful but not life-changing. The bigger value is that the reduced rate may attract more visitors, which supports the tourism businesses many expat communities depend on
- If you're staying home, enjoy the quiet. Cities like Cuenca become noticeably emptier during Semana Santa as Ecuadorian families travel. It's actually a pleasant time to be in town if you're not traveling -- less traffic, less noise, peaceful atmosphere
- Alcohol sales may be restricted. Some municipalities restrict alcohol sales during Semana Santa, particularly on Good Friday. Rules vary by canton -- in Cuenca, sales are typically restricted from Thursday evening through Friday
