The Manta municipal government projects 280,000 visitors and a $9.5 million economic impact from the city's 2026 Carnival celebration, running February 14-18. It's now the largest Carnival event on Ecuador's Pacific coast.

What's Happening

  • 14 km parade route through the Malecon, Tarqui, and Barbasquillo -- 40% longer than 2025
  • International music including Colombian vallenato star Carlos Vives and Ecuadorian pop group Tercer Mundo
  • New beachfront gastronomy fair ("Sabores del Pacifico") with 120 vendors showcasing coastal cuisine from Esmeraldas to Santa Elena
  • Traditional water festival in the Tarqui district
  • Artisan market with 200+ stalls featuring toquilla straw hats, tagua carvings, and chocolate
  • Sand sculpture competition on Murcielago beach

By the Numbers

| Category | Projection | |---|---| | Total visitors | 280,000 (up from 235,000 in 2025) | | Hotel occupancy | 94% across 3,200 registered rooms | | Average visitor spend | $34/day | | Direct economic impact | $9.5 million | | Temporary jobs created | 2,800 | | Municipal investment | $1.2 million |

Getting There

  • Eloy Alfaro airport now operates daily flights from Quito (TAME and Avianca) and three weekly from Guayaquil
  • By car from Quito: approximately 7-8 hours via Santo Domingo
  • By car from Guayaquil: approximately 3.5 hours

Security

The city has deployed 1,200 police and military personnel with drone surveillance over the parade route and beach areas, alcohol-free zones around children's areas, and emergency medical teams every 2 km.

What Expats Should Know

If you're heading to Manta for Carnival:

  • Book accommodation now -- 94% occupancy means slim pickings
  • Expect water games -- unlike Ambato, Manta's carnival is full-contact water warfare in some areas
  • The food fair is worth the trip -- 120 vendors is genuinely impressive for a coastal food festival
  • Return travel: Plan to leave Wednesday morning, not Tuesday evening -- everyone leaves Tuesday
