Roadwork in Guayaquil is turning into a business-access problem in several parts of the city.

The city has more than 100 kilometers of streets under intervention across the north, center and south. Most roads remain partially open, but some are closed or have restricted access.

Merchants in affected areas report lower sales, reduced hours, staff cuts and fewer customers.

Where The Pressure Is Showing

The affected areas include Rodolfo Baquerizo Nazur Avenue in La Alborada, Rumichaca Street in the center, and the area around the Faculty of Social Communication in Quisquis.

On Rodolfo Baquerizo Nazur, a section between Agustin Freire and Jose Maria Egas has been closed since March 20 while municipal reconstruction work continues.

Some businesses in the area report sales declines between 40% and 50%. One computer-equipment business owner also reported sales down at least 50%, saying customers who normally arrive by vehicle have trouble entering or parking.

In the center, work on Rumichaca affects about five blocks between Febres Cordero and Pedro Franco Davila, where reconstruction is underway on the Metrovía trunk 4 lane.

What This Means For Expats

For Guayaquil residents, the practical issue is access. A route that looks close on a map may be awkward if turns, parking or partial closures force detours.

If you have appointments, repairs, shopping or medical errands in the affected areas, build in extra time and call ahead before driving across town.

For business owners, this is also a reminder that municipal works can affect customer flow even when roads are technically open. Visibility, parking and the perception that a street is closed can matter as much as the closure itself.
