Central Guayaquil has traffic restrictions for the city's July civic events. The key closure affects Avenida 9 de Octubre, between Lorenzo de Garaicoa and Malecón Simón Bolívar.
Timing
The closure began at 07:00 on Thursday, July 23 and is scheduled to remain in place until 07:00 on Saturday, July 25, 2026. During the same period, Avenida Malecón is closed between Sucre and Loja.
The closures are tied to events marking the 491st anniversary of Guayaquil's foundation.
Additional movement impacts
A student parade is scheduled for July 23 from 08:00, moving from Malecón and Olmedo to Malecón and Aguirre. A thanksgiving mass is scheduled from 09:00 to 12:00 on Víctor Manuel Rendón, between Córdova and Pedro Carbo, near La Merced church and the Fiscalía building.
The traffic authority says agents are being deployed for the civic events and recommends planning travel in advance and using alternate routes.
What this means for expats
If you have an airport, business, restaurant, or hotel trip through central Guayaquil this week, leave more time than usual and avoid treating the waterfront corridor as a through-route. These are timed event closures, not a permanent street change.
