Guayaquil’s bus-fare change is not immediate.
The city’s legal reform takes effect once it is published in the Municipal Official Gazette. From that point, the transition runs in two stages.
The First Six Months
For the first 180 days, or six months, riders keep paying the same 30-cent fare.
During that transition, the Municipality of Guayaquil, through ATM, will assume a monthly subsidy of $1.134 for each active unit.
After The Transition
After the six-month transition, the fare will not be the same on every bus. The final amount will depend on the modernization completed by each unit.
Municipal authorities also warned that operators that do not complete modernization and Guayaquil RTV will permanently lose their operating permit.
What This Means For Expats
If you live in Guayaquil, the fare on your actual route may depend on whether that operator modernizes. The practical thing to watch is not just the citywide announcement, but the specific bus units serving your neighborhood.
