Good Friday is here, and Ecuador effectively shuts down for a three-day weekend. If you are wondering whether you can get cash, buy groceries, or take advantage of that VAT discount everyone has been talking about -- here is the practical breakdown.

The Holiday

Friday, April 3, 2026 is a mandatory non-recoverable holiday (feriado obligatorio no recuperable) in Ecuador. Unlike some Ecuadorian holidays where businesses can choose to work and make up the hours later, Good Friday is a full stop. The holiday period extends through Sunday, April 5, creating a three-day weekend.

What's Closed

Banks

Asobanca (Asociacion de Bancos Privados del Ecuador -- the private banking association) confirmed that all bank branches are closed Friday through Sunday. They reopen on Monday, April 6.

However:

  • ATMs remain operational throughout the weekend
  • Digital banking -- mobile apps, online transfers, bill payments -- all function normally
  • Banco del Pacifico, Pichincha, Guayaquil, Produbanco, and all other major banks follow the same schedule

If you need to do anything that requires a teller window -- depositing checks, opening accounts, notarized transactions -- do it today (Thursday) or wait until Monday.

Government Offices

All government offices are closed for the full weekend:

  • Registro Civil -- no cedula renewals, no document processing
  • SRI (Servicio de Rentas Internas -- Ecuador's tax authority) -- offices closed, though online services remain available
  • IESS (Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social -- social security) -- closed
  • Municipal offices -- closed, including property tax and utility payment windows
  • Courts and legal offices -- closed

Other Closures

  • Post offices -- closed
  • Most private businesses -- will close or operate reduced hours on Friday. Many close Thursday afternoon as well
  • Schools -- already on Semana Santa break

What's Open

Supermarkets and Pharmacies

Supermarkets and pharmacies are not required to close on Good Friday. Most major chains will operate, though hours may be reduced:

  • Supermaxi, Coral, Gran Aki, Mi Comisariato -- expect reduced hours, typically opening later and closing earlier than normal. Check your local store
  • Fybeca, Pharmacys, Medicity -- major pharmacy chains maintain at least emergency/on-call locations in each city

Restaurants and Tourism

Restaurants, hotels, and tourism operators stay open -- and this is where the VAT deal comes in.

Gas Stations

Open throughout the weekend.

Hospitals and Emergency Services

Emergency rooms operate 24/7 regardless of holidays. ECU 911 remains active.

The 8% VAT Deal

President Noboa ordered the VAT (IVA) reduced from 15% to 8% for tourism-related services during the Semana Santa weekend. This applies to:

  • Hotel and lodging -- any registered accommodation
  • Restaurant meals -- at establishments registered with the tourism ministry
  • Tour packages and excursions
  • Tourist transportation services
  • Ecotourism and adventure tourism activities

The discount is automatic -- you do not need to do anything special. Registered businesses will apply the 8% rate on your invoice. On a $200 hotel stay, you save $14 compared to the normal 15% rate. Not enormous, but it adds up over a full weekend of tourism spending.

Important: The reduced rate applies only to tourism-registered businesses. Your regular neighborhood restaurant may or may not qualify depending on its registration status. Hotels and tour operators almost certainly do.

Major Processions and Traffic

Good Friday brings major religious processions across Ecuador, and these cause significant traffic disruptions:

Quito Historic Center

The Procesion de Jesus del Gran Poder is Ecuador's largest Good Friday procession. Thousands of cucuruchos (penitents in purple robes) walk through the colonial center. Multiple streets in the Centro Historico will be closed to vehicle traffic for most of the day. If you need to get through central Quito on Friday, plan alternative routes or use the Ecovia/Trolebus corridors.

Guayaquil

Processions move through the central city and Malecon 2000 area. Expect road closures along the waterfront and near major churches. Traffic in the downtown core will be disrupted from mid-morning through early evening.

Other Cities

Cuenca, Riobamba, Loja, Ambato, and most sierra cities hold processions through their historic centers. If you live in or near any city center, expect noise, crowds, and road closures.

What This Means for Expats

  • Get cash today if you need it. ATMs will work over the weekend, but machines in smaller towns or tourist areas can run out during holiday weekends when everyone withdraws at once. Having cash on hand avoids the problem entirely
  • The 8% VAT is a nice bonus, not a reason to change plans. If you were already planning a weekend trip, you will save a few dollars on hotel and meals. But the savings are modest -- do not plan a trip solely around a 7-percentage-point VAT discount
  • Enjoy the quiet if you are staying home. Ecuadorian cities empty out during Semana Santa as families travel to the coast or countryside. If you are staying put, you will find less traffic, quieter streets, and a peaceful atmosphere. It is one of the most pleasant times to be in Cuenca, Quito, or any highland city
  • Alcohol restrictions may apply. Some municipalities restrict alcohol sales on Good Friday. Rules vary by canton -- check locally. In Cuenca, sales are typically restricted from Thursday evening through Friday
  • Monday is back to normal. Banks, government offices, and businesses reopen Monday, April 6. If you have pending paperwork or errands, Monday morning will be busier than usual as everyone catches up
