Fuel costs remain a household-budget issue in Ecuador, and June brought the highest reported post-subsidy prices for both diesel and Extra gasoline.
Teleamazonas reported that diesel reached USD 3.25 per gallon in June 2026, while Extra gasoline reached USD 3.31 per gallon.
Why Prices Move
The source links the recent pressure to international oil-market volatility, including Middle East tensions and uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz, where it says about 20% of global oil supply circulates.
Ecuador's band system updates fuel prices on the 12th of each month. Teleamazonas reported that the mechanism allows prices to move with international values, within limits of up to 5% higher and 10% lower.
Context On Diesel And Extra
Diesel subsidy removal in September 2025 raised the gallon price from USD 1.80 to USD 2.80, according to the report. Diesel later fell to USD 2.70 in February 2026 before rising to USD 3.25 in June.
Extra and Ecopaís gasoline stopped receiving subsidies in 2024. Extra was reported at USD 2.88 in September 2025, dropped to USD 2.67 in January 2026, and reached USD 3.31 in June.
What This Means for Expats
If you drive often, fuel is now one of the more visible monthly cost variables. Budget with the 12th of each month in mind, especially if you commute, travel between cities, or rely on a generator or diesel-linked transport services.
