Ecuador's trade dispute with Colombia may be shifting again on June 1.
Primicias reports that President Daniel Noboa ordered Ecuador to eliminate the security tariff currently charged on Colombian imports starting June 1, 2026.
The trade fight began on January 21, 2026, when Noboa announced a security tariff that later reached 100%.
What The Tariff Affected
Primicias reports that the tariff affected imports from Colombia including:
- Medicines
- Cosmetics
- Plastic manufactures
- Rubber manufactures
- Other Colombian products
The outlet says those costs affected the prices consumers pay.
What Colombia Did In Response
Primicias reports that Colombia suspended electricity sales to Ecuador, which depends on Colombian electricity for about 10% of local market supply.
Colombia also imposed tariffs of 35% to 75% on about 191 Ecuadorian products and prohibited land entry of products including rice.
What Still Has To Happen
Primicias reports that the tariff elimination still must be formalized by Ecuador's customs authority, Senae.
The Andean Community process also remains active because the CAN had set a deadline to remove tariffs it considers barriers to bilateral trade.
What This Means For Expats
If the tariff is actually removed, the biggest day-to-day effect should be prices and availability for Colombian products. That can matter for pharmacy items, personal-care products, packaged goods and imported household items.
The practical thing to watch is not the social-media announcement. It is whether Senae formalizes the change and retailers start adjusting inventory and prices after June 1.
