E-Visa System Now Mandatory -- Processing Times Stretched to 4-5 Months

If you are planning to apply for an Ecuadorian visa in 2026, prepare for a long wait.

Ecuador's e-visa system became the exclusive method for all visa applications as of December 15, 2025. Paper applications submitted in person at the Cancilleria (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) or at Ecuadorian consulates are no longer accepted. Everything goes through the online portal.

The transition has not been smooth.

• Document verification delays -- digital uploads sometimes fail quality checks that require manual review

The Income Requirements

The income thresholds were updated alongside the e-visa rollout:

• Pensioner and Rentista: $1,458/month -- this is calculated as three times Ecuador's minimum wage (currently $486/month). Applicants must demonstrate this income through pension statements, investment returns, or other verifiable passive income sources
• Digital Nomad: $1,446/month -- slightly below the Pensioner/Rentista threshold, with documentation of remote employment or freelance contracts
• Professional: $486/month -- equivalent to one minimum wage, but requires a formal employment contract with an Ecuadorian company or institution
• Investment: $48,200 -- a lump sum deposited in an Ecuadorian bank or invested in Ecuadorian real estate or business

Dependents add to the income requirement. Each dependent (spouse, children) typically requires an additional $250/month in demonstrated income.

How the E-Visa System Works

1. Create an account on the Cancilleria's visa portal
2. Select your visa category and fill in the application form
3. Upload required documents -- scanned copies of passport, apostilled documents (birth certificate, police clearance, income verification), passport photos
4. Pay the application fee online
5. Wait for review -- the system provides status updates, but response times are inconsistent
6. Attend a virtual or in-person interview if requested
7. Receive approval or denial electronically
8. Visit a Cancilleria office to have the visa stamped in your passport

Common Problems

Applicants and immigration attorneys are reporting several recurring issues:

• Document upload failures -- the system rejects files that exceed size limits or do not meet format requirements
• System outages -- the portal goes offline periodically, sometimes losing in-progress applications
• Inconsistent communication -- applicants receive status changes without explanation, or receive no communication for weeks
• Apostille confusion -- the system's requirements for apostilled documents are not always clearly stated, leading to rejections for improperly authenticated paperwork

What This Means for Expats

• Start your visa process as early as possible. If you are on a tourist visa (90 days, extendable to 180) and planning to convert to a residence visa, begin the application immediately. A 4-5 month processing time means you may exceed your tourist visa validity before your residence visa is approved
• Hire an immigration attorney. The e-visa system's complexity and inconsistency make professional help almost essential. An experienced attorney can navigate the portal's quirks, ensure documents meet requirements, and follow up on stalled applications
• Get your apostilles done in advance. Documents must be apostilled in their country of origin. For US citizens, this means obtaining apostilles from the US Secretary of State or relevant state authorities before coming to Ecuador. This process itself takes 2-4 weeks
• Keep copies of everything. Screenshot your application, download confirmation emails, and maintain a paper trail. System glitches can lose data
• Budget for the wait. If processing takes 5 months and you are on a tourist visa, you may need to plan for a brief exit and re-entry or apply for a tourist visa extension through immigration

The e-visa system will improve over time as staff become familiar with it and technical issues are resolved. But right now, patience and preparation are essential.
