Cumbayá Parking Search Can Take 20 Minutes As Demand Outruns Spaces

Finding parking in Cumbayá can take as long as 20 minutes, according to a new local mobility report. The pressure comes from a mismatch between the number of vehicles using parking over a day and the regulated spaces available in the parish.

The Numbers Behind The Search

Cumbayá’s Sistema de Estacionamiento Rotativo Tarifado (SERT) has 674 regulated spaces: 589 for cars and 85 for motorcycles. A mobility specialist estimated that about 30,000 vehicles use parking in Cumbayá each day through turnover of the available spaces.

The reported figure is not a count of physical spaces. It is an estimate of how many vehicles can use parking during the day as spaces open up again.

The regulated spaces are concentrated around María Angélica Idrobo, Rocafuerte, Luis Garzón, Francisco de Orellana, Chimborazo, avenida Pampite, and avenida Interoceánica. The local GAD also says there are about 450 private-parking spaces, but views the combined supply as insufficient for the volume arriving in the area.

A Proposal Is On The Table

Cumbayá’s parish GAD has proposed a parking building with more than 480 spaces on municipal land beside the parish headquarters. Its president, Pedro Tapia, said the proposal includes international financing, but that the municipality had not responded at the time of the report.

The heaviest pressure is reported near Parque de Cumbayá, Universidad San Francisco de Quito, and María Angélica Idrobo. Local officials say commercial and real-estate growth has added demand without keeping pace with parking infrastructure.
