Ecuador's long-running attempt to liquidate Correos del Ecuador has been extended again.
President Daniel Noboa issued Executive Decree 434, granting another 45 days starting July 1 to continue the liquidation process. The assets and liabilities of the entity are supposed to be transferred to the Ministry of Telecommunications.
Why It Keeps Coming Back
The closure effort dates back to 2020, when then-President Lenin Moreno ordered the liquidation and closure of several public companies. Since then, successive governments have extended the timeline rather than finishing the process.
Under Noboa, prior extensions moved the deadline first to December 31, 2025, then June 30, 2026, and now to August 14.
The company had closed balances on July 13, 2022, when it registered USD 26.7 million in assets and USD 10.7 million in liabilities.
What This Means For Expats
For residents who still think in terms of a national postal system, the practical message is simple: Ecuador's old public postal structure remains an unresolved administrative file, not a dependable everyday service.
For documents, packages and time-sensitive mail, continue using courier services, tracked delivery and local confirmation rather than assuming a normal public-post model is available.
