Ecuadorians are getting an extra day off -- and the country is about to move.

On April 2, 2026, President Daniel Noboa signed a decree suspending work on Thursday, April 30, creating a four-day weekend when combined with Friday, May 1 (Labor Day) and the regular weekend.

The suspension applies to public sector offices and is recommended for the private sector, which typically follows the government's lead on these "bridge" days (dias de puente).

The Calendar

| Date | Day | Status | |---|---|---| | April 30 | Thursday | Suspended (bridge day) | | May 1 | Friday | Labor Day (national holiday) | | May 2 | Saturday | Weekend | | May 3 | Sunday | Weekend |

For most Ecuadorians, this means working Monday through Wednesday of that week, then having Thursday through Sunday off. Combined with flexible scheduling at many employers, it functions as a mini-vacation window.

The Bridge-Day Tradition

Ecuador, like many Latin American countries, uses presidential decrees to create bridge weekends around holidays. When a holiday falls on a Tuesday or Thursday -- as May 1 does in 2026 -- the president typically suspends the intervening workday to create a four-day weekend.

The economic logic is dual-purpose:

  • Domestic tourism boost -- four-day weekends drive massive internal travel, benefiting hotels, restaurants, and tourism businesses in popular destinations
  • Political goodwill -- extra days off are broadly popular with workers and consumers

The cost is one day of reduced government productivity, which is generally viewed as worth the tourism and morale benefits.

Who Closes

Definitely closed April 30:

  • All public sector offices -- ministries, municipal governments, SRI tax offices, immigration offices
  • Banks -- all branches and most services (ATMs continue working, but physical branches close)
  • Courts and legal offices
  • Schools -- public schools observe the suspension; many private schools follow
  • Government hospitals and clinics -- operate with emergency-only staffing

Likely closed April 30:

  • Most private businesses -- shops, professional offices, services
  • Many restaurants in non-tourist areas
  • Medical and dental offices (private)
  • Notary offices

Open April 30:

  • Large supermarkets (Supermaxi, Coral, Gran Aki) with modified hours
  • Pharmacies -- typically maintain emergency rotation
  • Hospitals and emergency services
  • Tourism-sector businesses -- hotels, tour operators, restaurants in destination areas
  • Transportation -- buses, airports, taxis operate normally
  • Major retail chains in tourist destinations

Travel Implications

Bridge weekends are the biggest domestic travel events of the Ecuadorian calendar. Expect:

Booked hotels. Popular destinations fill up fast:

  • Coast -- Salinas, Montanita, Manta, Bahia de Caraquez, Puerto Lopez, Canoa
  • Sierra -- Banos, Mindo, Otavalo, Vilcabamba
  • Amazon -- Tena, Puyo, Misahualli
  • Galapagos -- always busy, but heavier during bridge weekends

If you plan to travel, book before April 15 for reasonable rates and availability. Last-minute booking during bridge weekends typically means paying premium prices or accepting lower-tier accommodations.

Traffic congestion. The main highways out of Quito, Guayaquil, and Cuenca experience heavy congestion on the afternoon of Wednesday, April 29, and the morning of Thursday, April 30. Return traffic peaks Sunday, May 3.

Key congestion points:

  • Quito to Coast -- via Santo Domingo toward Manta/Salinas
  • Quito to Banos -- via Ambato
  • Guayaquil to Salinas -- the most trafficked route in Ecuador during holidays
  • Cuenca to Coast -- via Giron toward Machala and Playas
  • Quito to Mindo -- heavy on Thursday morning

Bus tickets scarce. Long-distance bus routes to popular destinations sell out days in advance. If you plan to take Cooperativa buses for intercity travel, book at the terminal or via WhatsApp with the operator as soon as possible.

Flight prices elevated. Domestic flights within Ecuador (Quito-Guayaquil-Cuenca-Galapagos) see price increases of 30-50% during bridge weekends. Booking early is essential.

What This Means for Expats

  • Handle bureaucratic business before April 30. Banks, SRI, notaries, immigration offices, and most government services close for the long weekend. If you need to file documents, make in-person appointments, or handle anything requiring a government office, do it before Wednesday, April 29 or wait until Monday, May 4
  • If you want to travel, book now. Hotel availability and pricing will deteriorate rapidly between now and April 30. Popular coastal destinations are already filling up. Decision by April 10-15 gets you reasonable options
  • Consider staying put. Bridge weekends are excellent times to not travel. Your city -- whether Cuenca, Quito, or wherever -- is typically quieter and more pleasant as residents leave. Restaurants and attractions are less crowded. Traffic is lighter. If you have projects at home or want a relaxed weekend, staying local is attractive
  • Expect quieter workdays early in the week. Many businesses wind down productivity as the bridge weekend approaches. Getting responses from service providers, lawyers, accountants, or bureaucrats becomes harder starting Tuesday, April 28. Plan important communications accordingly
  • Coastal expats will see heavy visitor traffic. If you live in Salinas, Montanita, Manta, or other coastal destinations, expect traffic, crowds, and full restaurants. It is simultaneously the best time for local business and the most challenging time for residents
  • Labor Day (May 1) itself is a formal national holiday. May Day marches and demonstrations typically occur in Quito, Guayaquil, and Cuenca. These are usually peaceful but can disrupt traffic downtown. Worth avoiding central city areas that day

The broader point: April 30 through May 3 is a national pause. Plan around it, travel if you want, but handle all serious business before or after.
