Quito Fire Updates: Partial Velasco Ibarra Closure and Itchimbía Park Restrictions

Quito residents planning journeys near La Vicentina and Itchimbía face a changing combination of firefighting work, road restrictions and smoke precautions. September 17 morning reports described a partial closure on Avenida Velasco Ibarra, while the city’s public works agency had announced that Itchimbía Park would remain closed for the day.

These updates concern the fire in La Vicentina and Itchimbía. The road information is a dated morning report, rather than a guarantee that access will remain the same throughout Thursday.

Morning lane restriction follows overnight closure

At 07:00 on September 17, the Metropolitan Transit Agency, AMT, reported that the right-hand lane of Avenida Velasco Ibarra remained closed in the south-to-north direction. Its operations coordinator, David Argüello, explained that the lane was being kept available for firefighters’ work. Drivers were advised to consider Avenida Mariscal Sucre and Avenida Simón Bolívar as alternatives.

That was a different arrangement from the full closure reported on Wednesday night. The earlier notice covered both directions of Velasco Ibarra, also known as Oriental, between El Trébol and Hospital Militar. The city’s passenger transport operator also warned that night of potentially longer Ecovía journeys around Marín Central and Playón de La Marín.

Park reopening depends on inspections

The public works agency said Itchimbía Park, in El Dorado, would remain closed on September 17 because of the fire in neighboring La Vicentina. Specialist teams were to assess the ecosystem, air quality, ground stability and other conditions needed for a safe reopening. The announcement provides a reason to postpone a park visit; it does not establish a reopening time.

Firefighters reported that the spread in the upper section was controlled, but dry vegetation and strong winds complicated efforts in the lower area. Four ground crews were working to prevent further spread. Firefighters said they would remain for control and extinguishing work until the area was safe. Controlling one section therefore did not amount to a declaration that the whole incident was over.

For nearby households, authorities repeated advice to use masks and keep doors and windows closed because of smoke. On Wednesday night, Mayor Pabel Muñoz had also recommended placing damp cloths in door and window gaps to limit smoke entering homes.
