Ecuador's weather institute issued a practical warning for Sunday, August 2, 2026: expect strong temperatures and high levels of solar radiation during the morning and afternoon.

The warning comes from the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology, known as Inamhi. Pichincha and Imbabura were expected to reach extremely high solar radiation, the highest level on the published scale.

What the levels mean

The scale lists levels 1 and 2 as low, 3 through 5 as moderate, 6 through 7 as high, 8 through 10 as very high, and anything above 11 as extremely high.

The warning also placed Chimborazo, Carchi, Guayas, and Galapagos in the very-high range. Sucumbios, Los Rios, and Orellana were listed with high radiation.

The recommendation is to avoid sun exposure between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. and to use a hat, long sleeves, an umbrella, and sunscreen.

A useful expat habit

Weather warnings in Ecuador are often more useful when translated into a day plan. If you have errands, a hike, a bus connection, or an outdoor appointment, the midday window is the part to take seriously. Shade and water help, but the institute's guidance is specifically about reducing direct exposure.

This is particularly useful for people still adjusting to Ecuador's highland light. A cool breeze can make the day feel mild even when the radiation level is high, and cloud cover is not a reason to ignore the published guidance. The practical response is simple: move outdoor tasks earlier or later, carry sun protection, and use shade when it is available.

The alert is not a city-by-city forecast for every canton. It is a national radiation warning with province-level guidance. Check local conditions before heading out, especially if you are in the Sierra provinces listed at the highest level. If your route crosses provinces, use the higher-risk guidance for the part of the trip where you will spend the most time outside.

This is the kind of advisory that can be easy to underestimate when the temperature feels comfortable. Highland weather can change the way the exposure feels, but the published radiation level is the more useful signal for planning time outdoors. A short walk, a market trip, or a bus wait can turn into a longer period in direct sun when schedules slip. Carrying a hat or umbrella is a small adjustment, and the guidance gives residents a clear window to avoid when they can.

For people who have recently arrived in Ecuador, it is also worth treating sunscreen and a covered option as ordinary daily items rather than special vacation gear. The warning covers several regions, and the safest practical response is to follow the province-level advice while checking the local forecast for the specific canton.
