A major flooding emergency in Zamora Chinchipe left five people dead after heavy rains hit the rural parish of Guadalupe.
The overflowing waters affected Santa Isabel and Kantzama, where mud and debris damaged homes and infrastructure and left residents cut off.
Rescue And Road Impacts
Rescue teams put 48 people safe after they were trapped on river islets and on the roofs of flooded homes.
A separate emergency report described 38 civilians and 10 firefighters rescued after the river overflowed in Guadalupe on July 4.
The emergency also interrupted circulation on the Loja-Zamora road, one of the main land connections in the province, because of rain and flood conditions.
What To Watch
The provincial emergency committee was convened to coordinate response actions. National transport officials also moved heavy machinery to the area, while warning people to avoid traveling on the affected route because continuing rains made work unsafe.
For travelers, the practical point is simple: do not treat the southern Amazon routes as normal right now. Flooding, road closures, and rescue work can change conditions quickly.
