Ecuador's SRI allows eligible older adults and people with disabilities to apply the IVA refund automatically at the moment of purchase, but only when the beneficiary is registered and has an active confirmation code.
For 2026, the maximum refund for older adults remains up to $144.60 per month. For people with disabilities, the amount varies according to the accredited disability percentage.
How The Automatic System Works
The automatic refund is meant to discount or register the IVA refund directly during purchases at establishments authorized by SRI. That means the system is not universal: it works only where the store is connected to the authorized process.
What This Means for Expats
Foreign residents who qualify by age or disability status should not wait until a big purchase to test the system. Confirm your SRI access, activation status and code ahead of time.
Expreso also reported that some beneficiaries still fail to activate the code on time, do not know the automatic system exists, or continue waiting months for refunds in some cases.
Practical Checklist
- Confirm your SRI online user and password work.
- Verify whether your automatic IVA refund code is active.
- Ask the store whether it is authorized for automatic refunds before paying.
- Keep receipts if the automatic refund does not process.
