Semana Santa is here. If you have not planned for closures, you are already behind.

The Dates

Semana Santa 2026 runs from Palm Sunday, March 29 through Easter Sunday, April 5. Here is what is and is not a holiday:

| Date | Day | Status | |------|-----|--------| | March 29 | Palm Sunday (Domingo de Ramos) | Normal Sunday | | March 30 | Holy Monday | Normal workday | | March 31 | Holy Tuesday | Normal workday | | April 1 | Holy Wednesday | Normal workday | | April 2 | Holy Thursday (Jueves Santo) | NOT a public holiday | | April 3 | Good Friday (Viernes Santo) | National holiday (non-recoverable) | | April 4 | Holy Saturday (Sabado de Gloria) | Normal Saturday | | April 5 | Easter Sunday (Domingo de Resurreccion) | Normal Sunday |

The only guaranteed day off is Good Friday, April 3. It is classified as a feriado no recuperable — a non-recoverable holiday, meaning businesses are not required to make employees work an extra day to compensate.

Holy Thursday (April 2) is NOT a public holiday unless the government issues a specific decree declaring it one. In some years, the president has granted Thursday as an additional day off, but as of this writing no such decree has been issued for 2026. Many private businesses close anyway, but government offices and banks will operate normally on Thursday unless a last-minute decree changes that.

What Closes on Good Friday

  • Banks — all branches closed nationwide
  • Government offices — SRI (tax authority), Registro Civil, immigration offices, municipal offices, courts — all closed
  • Supermarkets — most locations closed. Some Supermaxi and Megamaxi locations in major cities may open with reduced hours, but do not count on it
  • Pharmacies — most closed or operating reduced hours. 24-hour pharmacy locations in major cities are the exception
  • Public transit — reduced schedules on buses and Quito's Metro/trolley system
  • Restaurants — many closed, especially outside major tourist areas. Hotels and tourist-oriented restaurants more likely to open

Major Processions

Ecuador's Semana Santa processions are among the most impressive in South America:

Quito — Jesus del Gran Poder

The Procesion de Jesus del Gran Poder is the marquee event. Thousands of cucuruchos — purple-robed penitents wearing tall pointed hoods — march through Quito's colonial center carrying elaborate floats depicting scenes from the Passion of Christ. The procession draws hundreds of thousands of spectators and effectively shuts down central Quito for hours. It typically departs from the Basilica del Voto Nacional on Good Friday morning.

Guayaquil — Cristo del Consuelo

Guayaquil's largest procession centers on the Cristo del Consuelo image, with tens of thousands of devotees walking through the city's southern neighborhoods. It is one of the largest religious gatherings on Ecuador's coast.

Nationwide Traditions

Fanesca dominates the culinary landscape during Semana Santa. This rich soup — made with 12 types of grains and legumes symbolizing the 12 apostles, plus bacalao (salt cod) — is the quintessential Ecuadorian Holy Week dish. Nearly every family prepares it, and restaurants across the country offer it as a special. If you have never tried fanesca, this is the week.

Travel Warnings

Semana Santa is one of Ecuador's peak domestic travel periods. If you plan to move:

  • Highway traffic on routes connecting the highlands to the coast (Quito-Esmeraldas, Quito-Santo Domingo, Cuenca-Guayaquil) will be severe. Travel times can double or triple from Thursday afternoon through Sunday
  • Beaches — Atacames, Same, Montanita, Salinas, and Playas will be packed with Ecuadorian families on holiday
  • Accommodation prices spike in coastal and tourist areas
  • Police checkpoints increase on highways — carry your cedula and vehicle documents
  • Alcohol sales restrictions — some municipalities ban alcohol sales on Good Friday. Enforcement varies

What This Means for Expats

  • Handle all government business before April 3. Immigration, SRI, Registro Civil — if you need anything from a government office, do it Monday through Wednesday this week
  • Stock up on groceries by Wednesday. Thursday availability will be unpredictable, and Friday is a near-total shutdown
  • Prescription medications — ensure you have enough supply through the holiday weekend. Do not assume your pharmacy will be open
  • Avoid highway travel Thursday afternoon through Sunday unless necessary. ECU 911 reports a spike in traffic accidents every Semana Santa. The combination of heavy traffic, reduced emergency response times, and holiday driving creates dangerous conditions
  • If you are in Quito, watch the Jesus del Gran Poder procession. Regardless of your religious beliefs, it is one of Ecuador's most significant cultural events and genuinely worth seeing
