Quito is under a short-term temperature warning as the city moves toward the dry-season transition.

El Universo reports that an INAMHI weather warning for the capital is in effect until 17:00 on Friday, May 29.

Expected Temperatures

The Centro de Operaciones de Emergencia del Distrito Metropolitano de Quito reported a medium level of 22-24 C and a high level of 25-27 C.

El Universo reports the high level applies to Pomasqui and San Antonio, Calderon and Llano Chico, Zambiza and Nayon, Cumbaya and Tumbaco, Conocoto, and Alangasi and Guangopolo.

The medium level applies to Atahualpa, Perucho and Puellaro, Calacali, El Quinche, Tababela, Puembo and Guayllabamba, Quitumbe, and the valle de los Chillos.

What To Watch

Cristian Paliz Acosta, a university professor of climate change, hydrology and watersheds, told El Universo that Quito's temperatures are a little above normal for the season, especially in the valleys.

He said May is a transition month toward the dry season and is quite variable, with more rain usually appearing at the start of June.

Paliz also said it is probable that rain will return starting Monday, June 1.

Because of the high temperatures and UV radiation, he recommended hydration, especially around midday, plus a cap or umbrella, light long-sleeved clothing in light colors, and glasses.

El Universo reports that INAMHI's warning also refers to high daytime temperatures in parts of the Coast and Sierra, very high UV radiation indexes, and wind gusts in parts of the Sierra.

Emergency Contact

ECU 911 says Ecuador's emergency institutions coordinate through the single number 9-1-1. Calls can be made from any fixed or mobile phone at no cost, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

What This Means For Expats

For Quito residents, the useful takeaway is to plan around the heat and UV warning through Friday afternoon.
