Another journalist has been targeted in Ecuador — and the circumstances suggest a deliberate setup rather than a random act of violence.

The Attack

Jose Vinces, an Ecuadorian journalist, was shot by unidentified gunmen after being lured to a location on Ecuador's coast under the pretense of investigating a tip about human remains. The attackers were waiting for him, suggesting the tip was a pretext to draw him into an ambush.

Vinces was shot and transported to a hospital for emergency treatment. The deliberate nature of the attack — using a false lead to position the journalist in a vulnerable location — marks it as a targeted assassination attempt rather than an incidental crime.

International Condemnation

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has issued a statement condemning the attack and calling on Ecuadorian authorities to:

  • Conduct a thorough and transparent investigation
  • Identify and prosecute the perpetrators
  • Provide protection for Vinces and other journalists covering security topics
  • Address the systemic failures that allow violence against journalists to occur with impunity

JURIST, the international legal news service, reported on the attack, placing it within the broader context of press freedom deterioration in Ecuador and Latin America.

The Pattern

Vinces is not an isolated case. Ecuador has experienced a sharp increase in violence against journalists in recent years, driven by the same organized crime networks responsible for the broader security crisis. Journalists who cover:

  • Drug trafficking and cartel activity
  • Corruption in government and law enforcement
  • Gang violence and territorial disputes
  • Missing persons and human remains

...face the highest risk. Coastal provinces — where narcotrafficking activity is most concentrated — are the most dangerous areas for reporters.

In January 2024, the assassination of presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencio — who was also a journalist and anti-corruption investigator — shocked the nation and drew global attention to the dangers faced by those who expose criminal networks in Ecuador.

Press Freedom in Ecuador: By the Numbers

Ecuador has dropped significantly in international press freedom rankings in recent years. Reporters Without Borders ranks Ecuador in the bottom half of countries globally for press freedom, citing:

  • Physical violence against journalists
  • Impunity for crimes against media workers
  • Government pressure on independent media
  • Self-censorship driven by fear

What This Means for Expats

  • Press freedom is a proxy for rule of law. When journalists cannot safely investigate and report on crime, corruption, and abuses of power, those problems go unchecked. This creates an environment where the information available to everyone — including expats — is incomplete and potentially misleading
  • The security situation in coastal provinces is more serious than headlines suggest. If journalists — who have local knowledge, sources, and language skills — are being targeted, the risks for anyone in those areas are elevated
  • Be cautious about what information you share publicly. While expats are not typically targets of the same threats facing journalists, maintaining a low profile and avoiding public commentary on sensitive topics (drug trafficking, corruption, criminal organizations) is prudent
  • Support independent media if you can. Subscribing to, sharing, and financially supporting Ecuadorian journalists and outlets that do serious investigative work strengthens the information ecosystem that everyone — including expats — depends on
  • The courage of journalists like Jose Vinces is what makes informed decision-making possible for all of us living in Ecuador. Their work deserves recognition and support
