Ecuador has activated assistance channels for Ecuadorians in Venezuela after two major earthquakes struck the country on Wednesday, June 24, 2026.
El Comercio reported that Venezuelan authorities raised the official toll to 164 deaths and 971 injuries on Thursday, while emergency teams continued rescue and damage assessments.
What Happened
El Comercio described the event as two major earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5, occurring just 39 seconds apart near Venezuela's Caribbean coast.
The U.S. tsunami-warning system issued a preventive alert for Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, then later canceled it after evaluating the threat.
Ecuador's president, Daniel Noboa, announced the shipment of assistance, and Ecuadorian authorities also published attention channels for citizens affected by the emergency.
What This Means For Expats
For most foreign residents in Ecuador, the direct impact is limited. The practical relevance is for households with family, business or travel ties to Venezuela.
If you have relatives or employees traveling there, verify their location, keep copies of documents available and use consular channels rather than relying only on social media updates.
The broader reminder is basic emergency planning. Ecuador is also seismic country, so every household should have copies of key documents, battery backups, drinking water and a family communication plan.
