Ecuador's recent stretch of heavy rain should begin easing from Thursday, but local storms may still continue in some areas.

Weather officials said several atmospheric and ocean conditions combined to intensify rainfall in recent days, especially on the Coast.

What Changed

Warm sea conditions off Ecuador's coast helped feed the rainy pattern. Sea temperature was described as one to two degrees above the normal average.

That available energy, combined with atmospheric waves, produced an important inflow of moisture and intense rain in areas including Guayas, El Oro, Los Rios and Santo Domingo de los Tsachilas.

Guayaquil Rain Was Unusual

Guayaquil recorded 90 to 100 millimeters of rain in just two days.

For this time of year, the normal monthly range is about 40 to 50 millimeters. In other words, the city received about double the usual monthly rain in only a few days.

The Forecast Shift

From Thursday, rainfall should decrease nationally.

The Amazon may still see light to moderate events. The Coast should see lower rain intensity, while the Sierra is expected to have more solar radiation.

Short, localized showers may continue, and some local storms could still develop because of high temperatures on the Coast.

What This Means for Expats

If you live in Guayaquil, Salinas, Manta, Cuenca, Quito or Loja, this is a mixed update: the broad rain pattern should calm down, but isolated intense storms are still possible.

Watch for urban flooding in low-lying coastal neighborhoods, avoid driving through standing water, and remember that mountain roads can stay unstable even after the rain slows down.
