Petroecuador Closed August Below Its 370,000-Barrel Daily Target

Petroecuador averaged 365,704 barrels of crude per day in August 2026, below the 370,000 barrels per day projected for the month by its manager, Sebastian Maag. The figure gives Ecuador's most important oil producer a clear monthly target miss even as the year-to-date comparison remains above 2025.

The August target

Maag made the 370,000-barrel projection on August 20, during the Korea-Ecuador Energy Cooperation Seminar in Quito. At that event, he said production had been on an upward path since April, with increases of about 4,000 barrels per day on average.

His published comment was: "Estamos en una trayectoria ascendente ya desde abril en adelante. Hemos venido subiendo casi 4.000 barriles diarios en promedio. La idea es seguir en eso." August's 365,704-barrel average shows that the upward trajectory did not reach the target announced for the month.

Why the comparison with 2025 needs care

Between January and August 2026, Petroecuador averaged 363,371 barrels per day, or 24,512 barrels per day more than the same period in 2025. That is an 8% increase over the 2025 average of 338,858 barrels per day.

But the source warns that the comparison is distorted by the sharp fall recorded in July 2025. That means the year-on-year improvement is real in the stated comparison, but it is not a clean measure of a normal production trend.

Petroecuador represents about 80% of Ecuador's total oil production. Private companies account for the remaining 20%. That makes the state producer's monthly performance a national economic indicator, not simply an internal company statistic.

Still below earlier levels

The source also says 2026 production has not returned to the levels recorded before 2025. Among the last six years, the highest January-to-August average was in 2021, at 393,208 barrels per day. The 2026 average is described as 7.5% below 2021 and 5.6% below 2024.

The next useful signals are the monthly production result against the target, the continuation of the post-April increase described by Maag, and whether output closes the gap with the 2021 and 2024 reference points.
