Ecuador is warning beachgoers, fishermen and coastal residents about high-energy waves from June 23 through June 25, 2026.

The alert says sea conditions are expected to range from moderate to rough along Ecuador's continental and island coasts. Waves from the southwest Pacific are expected to increase ocean energy, creating stronger rip currents and more forceful breaking waves near shore.

Red-Flag Beaches

Authorities said 12 beaches will be under red flag because of a high threat level.

In Esmeraldas, the red-flag beaches are Quingue and Mompiche.

In Manabi, the red-flag list includes Canoa, Jaramijo, San Lorenzo, Puerto Cayo, Machalilla, Puerto Lopez, Ayampe and El Matal.

In Santa Elena, the red-flag beaches are Manglaralto and Salinas-San Lorenzo.

Another 29 beaches will remain under yellow flag, which indicates a medium risk level during the same period.

What This Means for Expats

If you are on the coast this week, treat red flags as a hard stop for swimming and water activities. The warning is not just about bigger waves; it also points to stronger rip currents and more powerful shore break.

For planned beach travel, check official reports before entering the water, follow lifeguard and port-authority instructions, and be especially cautious with children, older adults and visitors who are not used to Ecuador's surf conditions.
