One week into Ecuador's nationwide curfew, the government released operational results that show the scale of the security operation underway.
Between May 3 and May 10, authorities detained 1,735 people across the nine provinces and four municipalities under nightly curfew restrictions. The operation's stated objective: "combatir estructuras delictivas y reducir la actividad criminal."
The Numbers
| Category | Result | |----------|--------| | Total detained | 1,735 | | Arrested for serious crimes (drug trafficking, firearms, extortion) | 643 | | Identified as criminal organization members | 412 | | Raids conducted | 221 | | Firearms confiscated | 213 | | Drugs seized | ~1.7 tons | | Vehicles recovered | 67 | | Motorcycles recovered | 89 |
The breakdown reveals that of the 1,735 detained, 643 were arrested for substantive crimes — drug trafficking, illegal firearms possession, and extortion — while 412 were identified as presumed members of criminal structures. The remainder were curfew violators.
What's Changed Since Last Week
When we reported on the curfew's first days (May 8), authorities had logged approximately 500 detentions and 80 investigation targets. In the four days since, the pace has accelerated significantly — suggesting either expanded operations or a backlog of enforcement actions catching up.
The curfew runs 11:00 PM to 5:00 AM through May 18 in provinces including Guayas, Pichincha, Manabí, Santa Elena, Los Ríos, El Oro, Esmeraldas, Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, and Sucumbíos.
What This Means for Expats
If you're in an affected province: The curfew remains in effect through May 18. Stay indoors between 11 PM and 5 AM. If you have early morning flights from Quito or Guayaquil, carry your travel documentation.
If you're in Cuenca, Vilcabamba, or Cotacachi: These areas are not under curfew. Daily life is unaffected, but plan ahead if traveling to restricted provinces.
Perspective: 1,735 detentions in one week across nine provinces represents a significant operation. The 213 firearms seized and 1.7 tons of drugs confiscated suggest the curfew is producing operational results — though whether this translates to sustained security improvements remains to be seen.
Extension watch: The May 18 end date is not guaranteed. Previous curfew periods have been extended based on operational assessments. Plan accordingly if you have late-May travel through affected provinces.
