Lundin Gold Plans to Raise Fruta del Norte Processing Capacity

Lundin Gold plans to increase the processing capacity of its Fruta del Norte gold mine in Zamora Chinchipe, according to a Primicias report updated August 24, 2026, at 10:40 p.m. The company says the plant currently processes an average of 5,500 tonnes of mineralized material per day and aims to reach 7,000 tonnes per day on a stable basis within one year.

More processing does not mean more mine output

The company's Ecuador spokesperson, Juan Jose Herrera, said the plan is to process more material in the plant, not necessarily to extract more gold. The distinction matters because the grade or concentration of gold in mineralized material declines as a mine advances. More rock can therefore be required to sustain a similar production profile.

Herrera said the company's goal is to sustain production near 500,000 ounces annually. For 2026 through 2028, Lundin Gold expects production between 475,000 and 525,000 ounces annually. Those figures describe the company's forecast range, not a guaranteed result.

The plan is part of a broader exploration and mine-life strategy. Primicias reports that Lundin Gold discovered two additional porphyry mineralized systems in July, bringing the total within its exploration area to seven. The company expects a first resource estimate for the Sandia discovery in early 2027.

Exploration spending is part of the operating plan

The company expects Fruta del Norte's approximate 5.85 million ounces of reserves to support operations through 2034, according to the report. Its 2026 exploration budget is USD 85 million, divided into USD 56 million near the mine, USD 21 million for regional exploration, and USD 8 million for converting resources into reserves.

For Ecuador, the significance is larger than one production target. Mining investment creates demand for services, energy, logistics, skilled labor, and public oversight in a region where operating conditions and infrastructure matter as much as the orebody. The key question for outside observers is whether exploration spending turns into a durable reserve and production pipeline.

Energy is an immediate constraint

Fruta del Norte currently consumes about 20 MW and is classified among Ecuador's largest electricity users. The government requires companies consuming more electricity to have their own generation by the end of 2026. Lundin Gold has signed a contract with Hidroquest for hydroelectric generation covering current demand, with room to reach 25 to 27 MW. The plant is expected to begin operating in the fourth quarter of 2026.
