Quito Will Deploy 586 Traffic Agents for the September 1 School Return

The Sierra–Amazonía school year begins its return on September 1, 2026, and Quito is preparing a traffic operation around the restart.

The Agencia Metropolitana de Tránsito (AMT) will deploy 586 agents at 166 educational units. The municipality also says that around 5,000 professionals have been trained since August 1 in road safety and risk factors.

Where traffic controls will appear

Traffic controls will also be placed at 70 strategic points located at shopping centers and stationery stores. Those locations matter beyond the school gates because families often combine school trips with back-to-school purchases.

The return is staggered. On September 1, the schedule covers high school and initial levels; on September 2, it covers grades 8 through 10 and preparatory levels; and on September 3, it covers grades 5 through 7 and grades 2 through 4.

The operation does not provide an average delay estimate or a complete street-by-street map. For residents, the practical expectation is a change in traffic patterns beginning September 1, with the most useful adjustment being extra time around schools, shopping areas, and the first morning commute.
