Home to Quito, Ecuador's capital and one of the world's highest capital cities. Pichincha Province blends colonial heritage with modern infrastructure, making it a top destination for expats seeking urban amenities at altitude.

Cuenca is Ecuador's most popular expat city, especially for retirees. Azuay Province offers colonial charm, excellent healthcare, a walkable city center, and one of Latin America's most established foreign-resident communities.

Loja Province is best known for Vilcabamba, the "Valley of Longevity" that attracts wellness-focused expats and retirees. The city of Loja is Ecuador's most culturally conservative major city, with strong music and university traditions.

Imbabura is home to Cotacachi and Otavalo, two of Ecuador's most distinctive towns. Cotacachi attracts retirees with its leather goods and small-town atmosphere; Otavalo is world-famous for its indigenous market.

Tungurahua Province centers on Ambato, Ecuador's garden city, and Baños, the adventure tourism capital. Baños is a popular weekend and short-term destination for expats living elsewhere in Ecuador.

Santo Domingo is a fast-growing commercial city between the coast and highlands. Known for the Tsáchila indigenous community (formerly "Colorados") with their distinctive red hair dye. Not a typical expat destination but strategically located.

Morona Santiago is the gateway to Ecuador's southern Amazon. Macas is a small, friendly town with Shuar indigenous communities nearby. Adventure and ecotourism potential.

Napo is Ecuador's most accessible Amazon province. Tena is the rafting and jungle-tourism hub, while Coca serves oil-field workers. Popular with adventure travelers and those studying rainforest ecology.

Orellana is deep Amazon, centered on Coca, the oil capital of Ecuador's Oriente. Yasuní National Park — one of the most biodiverse places on Earth — is partially here.

Pastaza sits between the highlands and the Amazon. Puyo is a relaxed town with easy access to both jungle and Andes. Popular with those who want Amazon proximity without full tropical heat.

Sucumbíos is Ecuador's northeastern Amazon, centered on Lago Agrio, an oil boomtown. The province has faced environmental challenges from petroleum extraction. Not a tourist or expat destination.

Zamora Chinchipe is Ecuador's southernmost province, a biodiversity hotspot with podocarpus forests and the Podocarpus National Park extension. Zamora is a quiet town popular with birdwatchers.

The Galápagos Islands are a province unto themselves, a UNESCO World Heritage site with strict immigration controls. Permanent residency is nearly impossible for foreigners; most expat presence is tourism-related or scientific.
